HOW TO PROTECT PRIVACY

RESPONSIBILITY of Hospitals/Doctors:

The use of passwords to limit access to the records.

Using systems that can track the individuals or organizations accessing the records and modifing it.

Doctors should "tag" a record that is too sensitive. If anyone else wants to access the file he/she will need to contact the primary doctor.

RESPONSIBILTIY of Individuals/Patients:

One can obtain a copy of his/her medical record for a small fee from the Medical Information Bureau and if it detects any errors, should contact the bureau and get that information corrected.

Whenever signing a waiver for release of personal medical records one should try to limit the amount of information.
